SecurE-mail Gateway
The SecurE-Mail Gateway is the efficient and cost-saving central manager of your secure E-Mail communication
The SecurE-Mail Gateway centralizes the following functions:
- Standard administration for secure E-Mails
- E-Mail encryption/decryption/signature according to the S/MIME and OpenPGP Standard
- E-Mail encryption with Utimaco SafeGuard® PrivateCrypto
- Automatic generation of keys and certificates
- Automatic import of certificates
- User and domain certificates (corporate certificates)
- Configuration via the web management
E-Mail exchange is the most commonly used internet application.
The information exchange by electronic post alone does not reflect the
corporate-specific organizational structures. If specific procedures with
far-reaching consequences should be handled this way, it will be necessary to
use encrypted and/or signed E-Mails, which is, among other things, the case
of the stand-in arrangements, the distributed processing of documents or the
issuing of receipts of delivery. Cryptographic operations, particularly when bound
to single persons or workplaces, may, however, obstruct the workflow. Cryptographic
operations for secure e-mail are the E-Mail signature and the E-Mail encryption.
E-Mail-Signature
One important issue in the modern usage of
e-mails is their authenticity. Even if most users still make a difference
between e-mails and written documents, they still have great confidence in
e-mail communication for their daily business transactions. Thus, serious
loss may occur as a result of falsified, user-misleading e-mails. Classic
e-mail services do not provide a secure solution for the verification of
the e-mail origin. Moreover, they only provide cryptic information which
can only be understood by experienced system administrators. Digital signature
provides a secure and user-friendly solution to verify the origin (sender's signature)
or the route of transport (route confirmation).
E-Mail-Encryption
In addition to authenticity, confidentiality
also is an essential aspect of modern e-mail communication.
The comfort of modern e-mail services makes it invisible for the
user whether e-mail continues to stay within the secured area of
his company or is led through insecure public networks. In the modern
working environment, including teleworking and outsourcing, these
frontiers are becoming blurred. The encryption of e-mails is an
important mechanism enabling companies to take advantage of the e-mail
facilities without taking security risks.
SecurE-Mail Gateway: Mode of operation and concept
This is the starting point of
the SecurEmail Gateway concept. The SecurEmail Gateway is
integrated and located centrally in the network and enables the
application of a central corporate directive for the distribution of
e-mails, as well as the application of cryptographic operations.
According to the basic approach of
the Gateway, The SecurE-Mail Gateway is always located in the
central area of the network (Common Point of Trust). The SecurE-Mail
Gateway solution decrypts and verifies incoming E-Mail and encrypts
and signs the outgoing emails. Due to its function as a “central
post office”, the Gateway ensures confidentiality (encryption)
and integrity (signature) for the complete E-Mail communication.
The SecurE-Mail Gateway represents the upgrading of the E-Mail
server already used. Defined user groups or even single users are
able to get their E-Mails signed automatically before forwarding them.
The procedures of encryption/decryption,
signature and verification are being handled in a user-transparent way.
If the recipient’s certificate is available, the E-Mail to be sent is
encrypted automatically. The centralized storage of received certificates
makes the encryption possible even if the sender of the E-Mail has not
activated any direct communication with the e-mail recipient yet.
